Mesothelioma

What is Mesothelioma?Mesothelioma is the type of cancer that develops in the thin layers of tissue that covers internal organs like lungs and abdomen. This thin layer is of tissue is called mesothelium. It is a very rare disease that occurs when a person gets exposed to asbestos (a mineral found in nature). The cure for mesothelioma is possible but isn’t available for everyone. There are mainly three types of mesothelioma:

  • Pleural mesothelioma: In this type, cancer starts developing in the pleural tissues of the lungs. It is the most common type of mesothelioma.
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma: It involves the development of cancer in the abdomen. It happens rarer than pleural mesothelioma.
  • Pericardial mesothelioma: When the tissue around the heart region starts developing cancer, the condition is called pericardial mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma SymptomsSince there are many types of mesothelioma on the basis of the organ of origin, mesothelioma symptoms vary with their type and organ of origin. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma:

  • Pain in chest
  • Pain while coughing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Lumps of tissue start showing on your chest
  • Sudden weight loss

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma:

  • Pain in the abdomen region
  • Swelling in the abdomen region
  • Nausea
  • Sudden weight loss

Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Pain in chest

Who is at Risk?Knowing the risk factors can help one in making more informed choices when it comes to cancer. The main mesothelioma risk factors are:

  • A person who has a history of exposure to asbestos is prone to developing mesothelioma. Asbestos is the main reason of every kind of mesothelioma condition.
  • If you live with a person who is exposed to asbestos, there are high chances that you may catch asbestos fiber from their skin and develop mesothelioma.
  • A family history of mesothelioma increases your risk of developing mesothelioma.
  • If you have gone through chest radiation therapy, the chances of developing mesothelioma become very high.

Mesothelioma CausesWhen it comes to mesothelioma causes, there is only one reason. Inhaling asbestos is the main cause behind mesothelioma. Asbestos fiber can travel into internal organs like lungs or abdomen and deposit in mesothelium. The presence of asbestos fiber causes irritation in the mesothelium, which eventually develops mesothelioma.Other uncommon reasons include:

  • Exposure to Zeolites
  • Exposure to high doses of radiation
  • Genetics

How is Mesothelioma diagnosed?A mesothelioma diagnosis is done in many stages. The standard procedure for doing that is as follows:

  • Scans: The first test done to detect the presence of cancer in the X-ray scan. It finds any abnormality in the lungs. If the mesothelioma doctor finds any abnormal growth or fluid, more detailed scans like CT scan and MRI are suggested.
  • Biopsy: It is the ultimate mesothelioma test that confirms the presence of cancer. A sample of your tissue is taken and diagnosed to check malignant mesothelioma cells.
  • Staging: A five staging system called IMIG is used to check the stage of pleural mesothelioma. There is no universal staging system for other types of mesothelioma.

How is Mesothelioma treated?Mesothelioma treatment is done according to the need, stage, and restriction of patient’s condition. Usually, a combination of two types of treatments is given to mesothelioma patients. The list of possible mesothelioma cure is:

  • Surgical Treatment: If possible, cancerous tissues are removed surgically. Sometimes it can cure the condition, while the other times, it may extend the life expectancy of the patient. At times, chemotherapy and radiation are combined with surgery to kill the cells that couldn’t be removed surgically.
  • Chemotherapy: Drugs are injected intravenously to kill fast-growing cells. This is the most common method to treat mesothelioma. Newer treatments in chemotherapy are being tested these days for better results.
  • Radiation Therapy: High-energy radiation is used to destroy tumor cells. Usually, it is done externally but some patients now prefer internal radiation therapy to minimize the damage done to other tissues.
