Korean food is a popular cuisine worldwide, like many other Asian cuisines, it is a combination of spicy, savory, and textured food. Most people are only aware of Kimchi Korean food, but there are many dishes to try. Here are a few recipes of Korean cuisines that are a must-try:

1. Candied Sweet Potato

This Korean food is a side dish that is the star of the show. It is denser than the sweet potatoes of the American version. Called Matang in Korea it is a vegetarian Korean food or vegan Korean food that is fried and coated with brown syrup. Like the American version, it is crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It is made using just a few basic ingredients and can be made in no time.

Ingredients

  • Sweet potato
  • Oil preferably vegetable oil
  • Sesame seeds
  • Sugar

Steps

1. Frying

  • Peel the sweet potato and rinse with cold water. Dry with a paper towel or cotton cloth.
  • Cut it into chunks so that it is about 2 wide and ½ thick and keep aside.
  • Pour some vegetable oil into a frying pan and heat it. To see if it is hot enough, take a tip of the potato and dip it in. If it is bubbly, then it is at the right temperature.
  • Fry the sweet potato chunks over medium heat until it is golden brown.

2. Make a coating syrup

  • To make the syrup, take a thick bottomed pan, add 1 tsp of oil, and spread it evenly around the pan.
  • Sprinkle ¼ cup of sugar over the oil and heat for a few minutes.
  • As the sugar starts to melt, reduce the flame and allow it to simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until it turns golden brown.

3. Combining it

Layout a non-stick parchment sheet on a plate and keep aside, add the fried sweet potato to the syrup and give it a mix. Sprinkle sesame seeds and transfer them to a parchment sheet leaving gaps between each piece.Allow the coating to cool down and when it becomes solid, move it to a serving bowl.

2. Bibimbap

It is among the popular Korean dishes which means mixing rice with meat and vegetables. It is a traditional Korean food found at every meal table in the country. It has a rice base and is topped with veggies and steak. However, the main ingredient is the gochujang sauce (available in Korean food items stores), which brings all the flavors together.

Ingredients

  • Cooked rice
  • Carrots, zucchini, mushrooms sliced
  • Large eggs
  • Steak thinly sliced
  • Black Sesame seeds
  • Corn starch
  • Gochujang sauce
  • Soy sauce

Steps

  • Start this Korean food by marinating the beef by rubbing corn starch on sliced steak. Put soy sauce over steak and allow it to sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  • Cook the short grain white rice-based and spread it in a wide serving bowl.
  • Heat a non-stick pan on medium heat and cook each of the vegetables mentioned above separately. Once done, place it next to rice in the serving bowl.
  • Sear the steak until it is not pink anymore and transfer to the same bowl.
  • Fry the eggs until the whites are firm and the yolk is liquid. Transfer it to the bowl which has the other prepared items.
  • To this, drizzle gochujang sauce and sesame seeds and serve.

3. Bulgogi

This is also one of the popular Korean dishes that is served with rice and Kimchi. It is easy to make the dish using beef as the main ingredient.

Ingredients

  • Boneless rib-eye steak
  • Small pear
  • Green Onions
  • Soy sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Sesame oil
  • Vegetable oil
  • Minced Garlic
  • Freshly grated ginger
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Steps

  • Freeze the steak by wrapping it in plastic and freezing it for 30 minutes.
  • Cut into thin slices of ¼ once it becomes stiff.
  • Take a bowl, and combine peeled and grated pear, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, cloves of garlic, ginger, and gochujang sauce.
  • Take a large-sized ziplock, combine the sauce and steak, marinate for 2 hours.
  • Take a grill and apply vegetable oil and heat over medium-high. Add steak to the pan and cook, until it is cooked through and charred. Do it in batches so that there is only a single layer.
  • Serve with green onions and sesame seeds.
  • To make it a complete meal, serve with Korean Noodle soup or rice.

4. Samgyeopsal

It is another staple dish in Korean food that is simple and easy to make. It is a popular BBQ dish among working adults in Seoul as it is quick to prepare.

  • Pork belly
  • Large onions
  • Green onions chopped
  • Soy sauce
  • Hot pepper flakes
  • Sugar
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Sesame oil
  • Minced garlic cloves
  • Gochujang sauce
  • Doenjang
  • Washed and drained lettuce leaves
  • Cucumber
  • Green chilli

Steps

  • Cut the pork into bite-sized pieces and refrigerate.
  • Rinse and drain shredded green onions.
  • In a bowl mix, soy sauce, sesame seeds, sesame oil, sugar, and hot pepper flakes. Pour this on green onions and place aside.
  • To prepare dipping sauce combine the hot pepper paste, sugar, soybean paste, garlic, sesame seeds, and sesame oil in a bowl and mix.
  • Heat a grill plate or pan, apply toasted sesame oil.
  • Place pork belly on the plate, grill until they turn crispy. Turn on the other side and repeat.
  • To make packages of this famous Korean food, place a piece of lettuce on a plate.
  • Add a piece of cooked pork, the dipping sauce, onion, and green salad on top.
  • Fold the lettuce so that it forms a packet and serve.

Korean food is low-calorie and has lots of vegetables and meat. Given that most of the Korean population is healthy and slim, Korean food can be considered a healthy option for those who are on a weight watch. Moreover, foods like Kimchi are fermented which is good for the gut, so indulge in Korean cuisines. Also, compared to Indian cooking, making them is relatively simple so try the recipes mentioned above!
