Mucocele

Mucocele is also known as a mucous cyst. It is a fluid-filled swelling that occurs on the lip of the mouth. Most cysts are on the lower lip, but they can occur anywhere in the mouth. When the mouth’s salivary glands become clogged with mucus, it develops cyst. The cyst can become permanent if it is not treated properly otherwise it is temporary and painless. Mucocele symptoms -The symptoms of mucous depend on two things -

  1. How deep the cyst lies within the skin
  2. How often the cyst occurs.

Usually, cysts are not painful but they are uncomfortable. But, the frequent cyst can become painful over time.

  • Symptoms near the surface of the skin include:
  1. Softness
  2. Bluish color
  3. Raised swelling
  4. Lesions less than 1 centimeter in diameter
  • Symptoms deeper within the skin include:
  1. Tenderness
  2. Whitish color
  3. Rounded shape

Who is at the risk?Anyone can be affected by this and more than 75% of the time it occurs in people who are younger than 40 years of age. Apart from that superficial mucoceles occurs more in females who are more than 30 years of age.Mucocele causes -The most common cause of mucous cyst is due to the trauma to the oral cavity such as:

  • Piercing
  • Cheek biting
  • Lip biting (most common cause)
  • Accidental rupture of salivary gland
  • Adjacent teeth causing chronic damage

Some other causes for the development of a mucous cyst in the mouth is due to poor dental hygiene and a habit of cheek or lip biting due to stress. It can also be developed as a bad reaction to tartar control toothpaste. The mucous cyst mostly happens to the people of the age group between 10 to 25. However, it can occur to any age group or any gender – male or female.Mucocele diagnosisFor any cyst, you should see a doctor. They will do proper diagnosis and rule out more serious conditions. You should also see a mucocele doctor if the cyst becomes uncomfortable and large. There are rare cases when the size of the cyst becomes more than 3.5 centimeters. Normally the size of the cyst is less than 1 centimeter. It is necessary to consult a doctor, as smaller, painless cysts are not detectable at home. This is true especially for the mucous cyst that develops inside the mouth. A biopsy and other medical tests may also be conducted in severe cases.Mostly, the doctor will let the mucus heal on its own. See your doctor again if it persists for more than two months.Mucocele treatmentThe treatment depends upon clinical symptoms for diagnosis. Your history will be checked related to lip biting. In some cases, the biopsy is required. A small tissue sample is removed and is examined under a microscope. By looking at the cells, the doctor will determine whether it is cancer or not.The biopsy is required in the following cases:

  • There is no history of trauma
  • The cyst is larger than 2 centimeter
  • Cyst’s appearance suggests adenoma( cancer) or lipoma

The treatment of the mucous depends upon the severity. Sometimes it doesn’t require any treatment. But in case of severity, medical treatment should be prescribed by the doctor. Treatment for the mucous which is not very severe include:

  • Laser therapy:

A small, directed beam of light is used to remove the cyst.

  • Cryotherapy:

In this therapy, the cysts are removed by freezing their tissues.

  • Intralesional corticosteroid injection

The steroid is injected into the cyst to reduce the inflammation and speed up the healing. If the condition is more serious, then the doctor will perform the surgery to remove the cyst or even the whole salivary gland. The treatment period of the mucous cyst depends upon the type and severity of the cyst. It may vary from a week to two years.Even after it is not sure that the cyst will not come back. The only way to ensure is to remove it surgically.
