What is Down Syndrome?

A condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome is known as down syndrome. This is the reason why this condition is also known as trisomy 21. This condition causes mental and physical developments disabilities and delays. There are three different types of Down syndrome that doctors and researchers have identified:

  1. Trisomy 21: when there is an extra copy of chromosome in every cell
  2. Mosaicism: when a child is born with extra chromosome but not in all cells
  3. Translocation

Down syndrome Symptoms 

There are quite a few Down syndrome symptoms that babies are affected by or show rather. A mother who is carrying a child with down syndrome will not show any signs of symptoms of that being the case however it is possible to find out through screening during pregnancy. However, despite that, there are some few ones which we have listed below for your reference and knowledge:

  1. Flat facial features
  2. Short neck
  3. Small head and ears
  4. Bulging tongue
  5. Poor muscle tone
  6. Eyes that slant upwards
  7. Atypically shaped ears
  8. Poor judgement
  9. Impulsive behaviour
  10. Short attention span
  11. Slow learning capabilities
  12. Congenital heart defects

 Who is at Risk? 

There are various Down syndrome risk factors as it can happen to anyone due to multiple reasons. Some parents are at a greater risk of giving birth to a child with down syndrome. We have mentioned them below for your reference and understanding of the same:  

  1. The age of a woman who is giving birth plays a role. As her age increases, so does the changes of giving birth to a child with this condition.
  2. It can be passed down due to genetics as well

Down syndrome Causes 

There are few factors that lead to Down syndrome causes which have been identified by researchers. One main cause is when a child has a 21st chromosome. We have discussed below for your understanding some of these causes across the types in details:

When baby’s cell develops each cell is supposed to have 23 pairs of chromosomes, making it 46 in total. Half of them are from the mother and half from the father. When one of them does not separate properly then this happens.

How is Down syndrome diagnosed? 

For Down syndrome diagnosis, a Down syndrome doctor will need to perform a certain number of imaging tests for this condition as there is no one common test to understand the root cause of the problem. As mentioned, the doctor may then have to conduct multiple tests to get a proper understanding of the problem:

  1. A screening test will be done for the mother to know if there is a likelihood that she is carrying a child with this condition. However, this test cannot tell for sure or even diagnose whether the baby has down syndrome or not.
  2. Certain diagnostic tests will be done by the doctor to identify whether the baby has down syndrome.  

How is Down syndrome Treated? 

There is no known Down syndrome treatment. However, there are a bunch of programs that have been curated to help people diagnosed with this condition. There are special education teachers and therapists to help your child with the following:

  1. Sensory skills
  2. Self-help skills
  3. Social skills
  4. Motor skills
  5. Language and cognitive abilities
