Computer Vision Syndrome

It is a condition which develops as a complex of vision and eye problems due to activities that cause stress to the short vision and commonly experienced when using a computer. It occurs only due to the constant use of computers or any other digital devices. It is important to exercise care if we are working for prolonged hours in front of a computer screen. Eye strain is a common symptom of working in front of a digital device. Although the strain may disappear or reduce once you stop using the computer, it may worsen for some people with existing health conditions.

Symptoms

  • Irritation
  • Burning sensation in the eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Redness and eye strain
  • Dryness in the eyes
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the neck and shoulders

Risk Factors

  • Wrong posture and irregular head position to view the screen also alleviate vision problems and also result in muscle spasms in the neck, back and shoulder.
  • On average, people spend 7-8 hours of a day looking at a computer or digital medium screen at work or home. Those who spend over three hours on an average in day viewing a computer or a digital device are at a higher risk of developing Computer Vision Syndrome.
  • Insufficient lighting
  • Glare on the digital screen
  • Incorrect viewing distance
  • Inaccurate sitting posture
  • Pre-existing or un rectified vision problems

Prevention

  • Taking frequent breaks from the computer screen, wearing glass if prescribed and getting your eyes checked regularly.
  • The 20-20-20 rule is one of the easiest and recommended Computer Eye syndrome treatment. It means to take a 20-second break to view something that is 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

Treatment

  • Regular eye check-ups and simple changes to computer viewing habits, the problems can be reduced.
  • Changes to prescription glasses could also help to gain optimal vision from Computer Screen Vision.
  • Prescribed lenses for meeting the demand of visual strain from viewing electronic devices may be needed to aid existing glasses.
  • Specially designed lenses, powered lenses or tinted lenses with coating may maximize visual ability and comfort.
  • Lenses prescribed to meet the unique visual demands of computer viewing may be needed.

10 Steps to avoid Computer Vision Syndrome

1. Regular check-up (at least once a year) to see how effectively your eyes are functioning could be of great help.2. Excessive ambient lighting from interior lighting or sunlight could cause eye strain. For comfortable use of a computer, ambient lighting must be half as bright as found in office spaces.3. Glare on walls, reflections on computer screens and eyes is another common cause.  Minimize glare by installing an anti-glare screen on the monitor.4. Upgrade monitor from the old tube-style ( cathode ray tube) to a flat-panel Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) style.5. Severe Computer Vision Syndrome can also be caused by too much brightness and contrast to the computer screen. Adjust the display setting to suit your vision.6. Blinking is very important and it does not happen when viewing a computer. It keeps the eyes moist, comfortable and clear.7. Eyes experience fatigue due to focusing and it is important to exercise your eyes.  Practice a few eye exercises in between breaks.8. Take short frequent breaks away from the computer for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Stretch your arms, loosen your shoulders and bend your back to reduce the risk of Computer Vision Syndrome.9. Modify your workstation if you need to look at the print paper and the computer screen. Place the print paper in line with the computer screen to avoid pressure.10. Consider wearing computer eyewear and it may be beneficial to get customized glassed to wear while working on the computer.
