What is oily skin?Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands make too much sebum. Sebum is a waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin and is vital for keeping the skin healthy. Oily skin causes Treatment for oily skin depends upon the reasons for oily skin. Oily skin causes include:

  • Genetics: Oily skin tends to be genetic. If the parent has oily skin, you are likely to have overactive sebaceous glands too.
  • Age: Your skin makes less sebum and collagen as it ages. This change in composition can make skin drier.
  • Place you live and time of the year: Where you live and the time of the year can make a difference to your skin type. People living in places with hot, humid climates tend to have oilier skin. Your skin is also more likely to have more oil during summer than in the fall or winter.
  • Enlarged pores: Pores on the face tends to stretch out with age, weight fluctuations, and previous breakouts. Larger pores tend to produce more oil.
  • Using the wrong skincare products: A mistake in the judgement of the type of skin can lead to using wrong skin care products resulting in oily skin. The right skincare products can make a huge difference in the oil situation on the face.
  • Overdoing skincare: When you wash or exfoliate your skin more than needed to get rid of the oil, you end up stripping too much oil from your face causing the sebaceous gland to get into an emergency mode where they produce too much oil to make up for the loss. This leads to oily skin.
  • Skipping moisturization: Moisturizers do not make the skin more oily, but instead, they hydrate it. It is important to regularly moisturize your skin with the right type of moisturizer.

How is oily skin diagnosed?Oily skin diagnosis is done by a dermatologist if,

  • Your face is shiny and usually appears greasy later on in the day
  • Makeup does not stay on and seems to slide off
  • The oilier areas of your face have blackheads, pimples or other types of acne
  • Pores are visibly enlarged, especially on your nose, chin, and forehead

How is oily skin treated?Oily skin treatment can be done by doing the following things:

  • Wash regularly: Wash your face twice a day to clean your pores and remove dirt and bacteria from the skin.
  • Use a toner: Toners cleanse the pores and recover the skin's pH balance.
  • Using blotting paper: They help in getting rid of greasy appearances.
  • Use a moisturizer: An oil-control moisturizer will help keep the skin soft, and supple.

If these do not help, the oily skin doctor may suggest other treatments options for oily skin cure such as:

  • Topical retinoids: They come in the form of lotions, creams, and gels. They are rich in vitamin A and are great for skin health.
  • Cosmeceuticals: Cosmetic products with bioactive ingredients that claim to be medically beneficial can sometimes help in treating oily skin.
  • Isotretinoin: It is an oral retinoid and has proved to suppress sebum production in the skin considerably.
  • Spironolactone: It directly reduces sebum production in the skin.
  • Oral contraceptives: After topical creams and oral medicine for oily skin do not work, oral contraceptives are tried. They contain estrogen and progesterone, which regulate sebum production.
