What is the BMI scale and what it measures?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measurement of how healthy you are in relationship between two prominent body metrics: your weight and height. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters.
A high BMI may indicate high body fatness but BMI does not diagnose health of an individual.

What is BMI prime?

BMI Prime is a ratio of a person’s BMI to the upper-level weight limit of “healthy weight”. It is intended to give a quick answer as to how far an individual differs from upper weight limits, as well as an easy comparison between people whose upper BMI weight limits are different. A BMI Prime between 0.74 – 1.00 is generally considered optimal for health.

What does my BMI result mean?

1. Underweight
Based on our calculations, you are underweight and may need to put on some weight. You are recommended to ask your doctor or a dietitian for advice.

2. Healthy weight
A BMI of 18.5-24.9 indicates that you are at a healthy weight for your height. By maintaining a healthy weight, you lower your risk of developing serious health problems.

3. Overweight
A BMI of 25-29.9 indicates that you are slightly overweight. You may be advised to lose some weight for health reasons. You are recommended to talk to your doctor or a dietitian for advice.

4. Obese
A BMI of over 30 indicates that you are heavily overweight. Your health may be at risk if you do not lose weight. You are recommended to talk to your doctor or a dietitian for advice.

What are the risks associated with being overweight?

Excess weight has the following effects on the body:

  • It increases how hard the heart has to work.
  • It raises blood pressure, blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  • It lowers high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or good cholesterol levels.
  • It can make diabetes and other health problems more likely.

What does it mean to be underweight?

  • Weighing too little might contribute to a weakened immune system.
  • It might lead to fragile bones.
  • Such people might feel tired more often than not.
